Interview with the Master Tutor

interline

tibia1. Why the colour of text on help channel has been changed to white? I have heard opinions that now players won't put attention to read it?

The old server message for the help channel included many forbiddances and appeared too strict for my personal view. Therefore I changed it to a more friendly and inviting style.
"Help" is the general key word for the help channel and therefore there shouldn't be any restrictions. That change of style also included the colour change. "Red" is a warning, and in that sense, it is not really needed anymore.

2. You told that you are going to decrase the limit of tutor's activity points needed not to be dissmised. What is this limit now and how much you want change it?

We have reduced the amount of activity points needed to stay active as a tutor significantly. As the master tutor, I focus more on tutors having fun in what they are doing instead of putting them under the pressure to reach enough activity points. I think that this will improve the quality of tutor help.
To gain activity tutors have to publicly help other players, which displays both, the knowledge of the game and the rules and as well the language skills. So this is an instrument to evaluate the suitability as a tutor, which we still need, so we could not do without activity points. I'm afraid that the exact amount of activity points needed is internal information that we decided not to share publicly. I can assure you though that the number is very low, so if a tutor offers help regulary, he or she won't have any problems at all to count as "active".

3. Senior tutors are expierenced tutors. However, 3 months being tutor isn't it too less to become promoted?

Well, if a tutor managed to reach his required activity points and survived without gaining bad reports for three months before we had reduced the activity points so greatly, he was considered an active helper, and therefore experienced. With the low amount of activity points needed now, we will have to watch this situation a bit first.
I can already spoil though that there will be several changes this year concerning the tutor system. Based on the feedback I got on the Tutor Main Board, in conversations at the tutor meetings and in internal discussion, we will introduce some changes from which we hope that they will improve the "life" as a tutor and make it more enjoyable. I'm afraid though that I cannot spoil any details yet.

4. As senior tutor I would love if I could see how many of my reports are procceded as correct and when the punishment is change etc. I am sure such statistics will raise quality of senior tutor's work. Sometimes I wonder if my report is correct the only thing what I do is to save the player's name I reported and then if he does not hid his account info I check whether he has been banished or not.

I can understand your wish to follow your reports but in my opinion if tutors focus too much on the rule inforcement, it will have negative side effects. Several tutors nowadays have to face harassing ingame. They are often blamed for banishments and reports they have allegedly made. The tutor's connection to the rule enforcement process is in my eyes not beneficial, even if they have no direct influence on it at all. The punishment a tutor proposes has no influence on the punishment that a reported player will receive. That decision is made by the customer support team solely.

5. What do you think of senior tutors being able to mute player for some time. Sometimes players sends a lot of spam, hack links etc. I suposse that it will be good idea that after senior tutor report player in rule violation window he could also check "checkbox" whether mute him or not. The situations when to mute would be described in reference and senior tutors reports could be checked that way. I think that it is good idea and it could save some people from being hacked or channels from being spammed etc.

I like the functionality of muting. It has many advantages but it bears many risks as well. Muting somebody can have many negative effects for a single player, and we cannot guarantee that every senior tutor would use it cautiously. The pros and cons really have to be discussed still and it is questionable if we will put that kind of responsibility in the hands of such a large group as the tutors. Especially because everybody is able to become and stay as a tutor easily. To mute somebody can be a very effective, but also a very dangerous tool.

6. What do you think of Senior tutors having possiblity to see their activity points? There is one danger that they will treat it like a competition. However, reports that are useless could be marked as bad and quality of tutor's work will grow up.

As I mentioned before, tutors do have to provide a minimum of work for the community, for example by providing helpful answers in the help channel for players who are in need of assistance. However, a tutor should not worry about his activiy points. He should focus on providing help. The requested amount of activity is so low that a tutor who became tutor for the reason of helping other players does not have to think about it. So I am against displaying activity points for tutors. I would not like to see any races or competitions between tutors, who would compare their activiy point counts, sort of like highscore lists. The goal of tutorship would be set to "how to get these darned points" instead of the question "how can I be of assistance for the community?".

7. Have you decided to be master tutor by your on or it was told to you that you get this function? If decision was yours why did you choose this department?

My boss gave me no chance. He stood behind me, grinning evully, with a big hammer in his hand and only stated "It's your free choice". Nah, I'm just joking!
Honestly, I think my motivation to become master tutor was the same as the motivation of many tutors and senior tutors: There is nothing more rewarding than to be of assistance for people which request help and to guide them.

8. Are you going to make any huge changes affecting tutors. If so, what would be these changes?

I have implied some things in the foregoing questions. Please understand that I cannot go indepth at this given point of time since not everything was clearly decided yet. We have an idea about where we would like to go, but unfortunately it's till too early to spoil anything.
I can say that much though: Our general guideline is to strengthen the beneficial influence of the tutorship for the community and to reduce the negative aspects for the tutors within their work, and for the community.

Some questions about you :)

1. How did you get employed in Cipsoft?

In 2007, I wanted to change my job that I had back then. By coincidence, I read an interview with Durin (I think it was him) on a fansite. In a sitenote he stated that CipSoft was looking for employees, so I took a look on the Cipsoft hompage and found the job advertisement. I checked the premises and decided to give it a try and here I am. Since nearly 3 years now. :)

2. Had you played tibia before you got employed?

I actually played Tibia for several years before I started my job here, yes. I enjoyed pretty much everything that Tibia holds.
And still today, I keep myself updated with all changes within the game, even if it is sometimes hard for me to do this next to working full time. However, I still try to solve all quests which are suitable for my character.

3. How your office day looks like?

My ordinary work consists of sorting out and forwarding content related bug reports that the customer support team received via boards and emails. Besides this, I try to answer questions about these bugs on the boards, and I also answer threads on the tutor main board. In addition to all that, I also answer several emails with questions or problems that some of our players have. Since I have quite a long Tibia history as a player, I also try to be of assistance if it comes to gamplay related questions in other departements. Furthermore, I keep myself updated about community work in general, especially within the game industry. I'm particularly interested in how other companies approach the challenges which we have to face every day. Conceptional work is part of my daily business as well. I am also involved in several game related discussions, and I can assure you that some of them are quiet heated. ;)

4. What does take you the most time in your office day?

As I am the master tutor, my duties on the tutor main board naturally, and also the conceptional work for the tutor system.  The second main field of work for me then is the work with the content related bug reports.

5. What is the most interesting and what is the most boring in your daily routine?
6. What do you enjoy the most in your work?

I can put many attributes on my work, but I would definitely exclude boredom.
The work is challenging, rewarding, very interesting and the best thing is that there are also often pretty funny situations, so I also have a good laugh every once in a while.
The most interesting things are if you have to face situations which you cannot predict and you have to trust your experience and instincts in order to assist the players. Furthermore it is very rewarding if I can provide help in the personal chats at the tutor meetings.

7. As a member of tutor's community I see you mostly replying in some threads on tutor's board I have noticed also your attendance in Master Tutor's Consultations. I know also you process some reports but what are the other duties of master tutor?

Well, pretty much everything that I have explained before. I help tutors, answer their questions and listen to their problems. And I do a lot of conceptional work currently for the the future of the tutorsystem.

8. What do you think of mytibia.eu specially of this tool http://mytibia.eu/tibia,ruleViolation ? In your opinion is there a sense in developing it? If so what would you add/remove/change in it?

I like MyTibia.eu. It's a nice fansite, it informs players of important changes and offers nice features. Like the tool you have linked me to. This tool is also a very nice feature. Its existance however, shows that players experience difficulties when they want to report something.
The main problems players face when it comes to reporting situations is that they have a hard time reaching help and that responses are delayed. These are issues that we have to work on and we are actually already discussing ways how we could improve our rule violation system.

9. Had you had any other functions in cipsoft than being master tutor. If so what were you responsible for?

Before I became the master tutor,  I had to do what my colleagues do as well. Mainly the daily comunication with our players like answering emails, enforcing the Tibia rules, evaluating possible problems and trying to help to solve them.

10. How many hours per day +- does it take to handle it?

I work 8 hours a day and my colleagues as well

11. What do you think of gamemasters being able to banish botters again?

A gamemaster can only react on reports or initiate limited personal investigations. A properly working technical solution is more just and objective in my opinion.
